Built in 1914 in the style of a French palace, this villa has served as a private residence, embassy, naval officer’s club, and later, a luxury hotel, hosting notable guests as Romy Schneider and Paul McCartney. In 2014, Berlin fashion designer Patrick Hellmann acquired the property and began renovations, restoring its historical details while bringing much of the design—previously done by Karl Lagerfeld in the 1990s—into the 21st century.
Each of the hotel’s 43 rooms and 10 suites has a unique layout and design scheme. Those in the Classic category retain Karl Lagerfeld’s decor, while those envisioned by Patrick Hellmann have a contemporary flair. Two suites feature particularly impressive details: The dual-bedroom Kaiser Suite boasts an antique library with original frescoes, and the first-floor Karl Lagerfeld Suite has lovely Art Deco touches and a stone balcony overlooking the gardens.

Surrounded by ponds and streams modelled to reflect the water gardens of Sigiriya fortress, Water Garden Sigiriya hotel has a direct view of the 5th-century rock fortress and palace.
The water ways and the Water Garden Sigirya hotel’s epic design was done by Channa Daswatte, one of Sri Lanka's leading architects who trained under Geoffrey Bawa.
According to the ancient Sri Lankan historical text the Cūḷavaṃsa, this area was a large forest, then after storms and landslides it became a hill and was selected by King Kashyapa (AD 477–495) for his new capital. He built his palace on top of this rock and decorated its sides with colourful frescoes. On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion. The name of this place is derived from this structure; Siṃhagiri, the Lion Rock.
The capital and the royal palace were abandoned after the king's death. It was used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century. Sigiriya today is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site, one of the best preserved examples of ancient urban planning.
